Susan M. Westra

Susan was born in Passaic, NJ and raised in Montville, NJ. She moved to Newton at the age of 13 and has been a Sussex County resident since. Susan graduated from Newton High School then earned an associate’s degree. She was the owner of a liquor store with her parents for many years.

Susan lived an extremely active life dedicated to staying healthy and giving back to her community. She was an avid runner completing the Marine Marathon -- an Olympic distance of 26 miles, 385 yards in 5 hours and 7 minutes. As a charitable and kind person, Susan was an active volunteer for more than 24 years with multiple organizations including Newton Medical Center helping Veterans, hospice and homeless organizations, and children’s charities. She was an animal lover who was especially fond of shelter dogs. Susan also expressed her passions as a Reiki Master, a Massage Therapist and a Yoga Instructor.

Susan was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Mildred Goerner; her husband, Gary H. Westra; and her beloved fur baby, Wally World. She is survived by her fur babies, Islip, Autumn Barbie, and Molly Marilyn Monroe.

Services will be private under the direction of Smith-McCracken Funeral Home.
