Born on October 10, 1927, in New York City, Walter was raised in Jersey City before relocating to Lafayette in 1977. In 2014, he established his home in Green Township.
Throughout a long and full life, he carried himself with steady purpose and quiet wisdom, offering an example of dedication that left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
Walter served his country in the U.S. Army with the 11th Airborne Division during World War II. He later devoted his working life to education, serving as Principal and Superintendent of the Sussex County Vocational School in Sparta until his retirement in 1989. His career reflected a deep respect for learning and a steadfast work ethic—qualities that helped guide others and strengthened the institutions he served.
Walter was predeceased by his wife, Marie C. Jakl. Together, they traveled to 63 countries—an enduring testament to their shared curiosity about the world and appreciation for the people and places they encountered along the way.
A man of practical skill and generous spirit, Walter built his own home and was always willing to lend a hand to others in the family with building projects. He enjoyed big band music, took pleasure in travel, and never outgrew the simple comfort of a good dish of ice cream.
He was also a member of Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church in Green Township, where faith and community were part of the rhythm of his life.
Walter is survived by his son, Scott Jakl; and his daughters, Linda Winicov(Ted) and Carol Cercone (Joe); his brother, Arthur Jakl; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton, NJ 07860, on August 7, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church, 48 Tranquility Rd, Andover, NJ 07821, on August 8, 2026, at 10:00 am
