Dear husband of Marg for 51 loving years. Treasured father of Miles (Erin) and Cara (Eric). Adored Papa of Allie and Ella Agar and Anne and Duncan Stewart. Cherished brother-in-law to Judy Agar, and beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews. Loving cousin and nephew to all his extended family. Predeceased by his parents Miles and Catherine ‘Katie’ Agar, and his brother Charles ‘Chuck’ Agar.
Al was born and raised in Niagara Falls, where he spent his youth playing multiple sports; when he wasn’t at the rink or on the football field, he was spending time with his close-knit family. He loved his days at Stamford Collegiate, where he was a running back for the Hornets’ football team. Al continued his football career while he studied at Dalhousie University (BSc) in Halifax. He also studied at the University of Waterloo (BPE) and Niagara University (MScEd).
Al started his professional career as an educator in 1965 at A.N. Myer Secondary School, and spent the next 32 years as a teacher and dedicated coach. He taught the majority of his career at A.N. Myer and Lord Elgin Vocational School. Al went above and beyond in his dedication to coaching, especially in wrestling, where he coached teams for numerous years, bringing several to SOSSA and OFSAA championships.
Al had a love of travel that began early in his life, when he attended the World Scout Jamboree in Warwickshire, England in 1957, and it continued with his best friend, Dave Talbot, travelling through Europe when they were both bachelors. His love of travel led him to meeting Marg in New York City on St. Patrick’s Day in 1972, and they have been travelling together ever since. Al and Marg have cherished memories of their travels to several continents, including Africa, Asia, Europe, South and Central Americas, and North America, with their most recent trip bringing them to Ireland in 2024.
Al felt blessed to become a dad at the age of 40, when the twins, Cara and Miles, were born. He was thoroughly involved in their lives, whether it be coaching their teams or driving them to their activities. Al and Marg were always happy to open their home to Miles and Cara’s friends, where everyone felt welcome. Cara and Miles couldn’t ask for a more patient and supportive dad. Al loved the time spent travelling as a family, especially trips to Florida and the East Coast. His love of family grew even stronger when he became a Papa, and he truly cherished the time he spent with his four grandchildren.
Al’s passion for sports never waivered. He had an immense love of golf and Bridgewater Country Club, where he played for nearly 50 years, passing on his love of the game to Miles. Bridgewater was a special place to him, and he made some truly valuable friendships throughout his years there. He played hockey until he was 82 with Play the Puck Hockey Association, and thoroughly enjoyed his time with his fellow hockey players. Al also cherished all the time he spent with the Stamford Old Guys, playing in golf tournaments and meeting monthly for their Wednesday lunches at Falls Manor Restaurant.
Visitation will be held at Patterson Funeral Home, 6026 Main Street in Niagara Falls, Ontario, on Tuesday, February 10th from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. The funeral mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Chippawa, on Wednesday, February 11th, 2026 at 11am. Interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery. Memorial donations to Hotel Dieu Shaver Foundation (Palliative Care) would be appreciated by his family.
Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear.
