

Peacefully passed away at home in Niagara Falls, Ontario, on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the age of 86. Beloved wife of the late Patrick Defoe (1997). Loving mother of Suzanne Defoe and Ryan Defoe (Holly). Cherished Nana of Patrick (Gloria), Chase, and the late Shaelyn (2024).
Dear sister of Mary-Anne Shanahan (late James, 2017) and Irene Schofield (David), and aunt to Thomas (Cindy) and Jessica. Fondly remembered by two sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
Elizabeth will be remembered for her kindness, patience, and loving nature. She began teaching piano and accordion at the age of 16 and went on to share her passion for music for more than 70 years. She participated in, and later judged, numerous accordion competitions, which took her to many parts of the world, including Iceland, Switzerland, Germany, England, Denmark, and Austria. Elizabeth also enjoyed painting and travelling, pursuits that brought her great joy throughout her life.
The family will receive friends at Patterson Funeral Home, 6026 Main Street, Niagara Falls, Ontario, on Thursday from 4:00–7:00 p.m. Funeral Liturgy will be held at the funeral home on Friday, January 9, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. Rite of Committal will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
At the heart of Betty-Jean’s life was a deep passion for teaching and for inspiring others through the joy of music.
