Helmut Erich Schiwy

Predeceased by his parents Emil and Elfriede Schiwy and his sister Hiltrude Schiwy. Helmut is survived by his wife Christel (nee Gustke), his brother Armin Schiwy, his daughter Susanne (Mitchell Perry) and step daughter Rebecca Schorr. Grandfather of Candise Gleason and Eric Gleason (Meghan). Great grandfather of Kiara and Lily. Uncle of niece Carol Engelbaum (Mark). Great Uncle of Marissa Mostowtt and Christopher Engelbaum.

Helmut was born in Herten Germany and did his apprenticeship in auto mechanics. He and his young family came to Canada in 1965 and began their new life in Niagara Falls. He was a member of the New Apostolic Church for many years. He married Christel Schorr in December 1975 and they made many memories traveling and going on cruises and road trips. He continued his hardworking career as a mechanic with several auto dealers and then worked for Kraft for many years, retiring at the age of 63. Helmut loved dogs and always had a pet at his side. He was very handy and you could find him in his workshop tinkering quite often. He made lovely picnic tables and rocking chairs for the grandchildren. He liked to make his own wine and play darts.

Helmut will be missed by his family and by his New Apostolic Church friends. The family expresses sincere gratitude to Northridge LTC for their wonderful care and attention.

In keeping with Helmut’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a Memorial Service at The New Apostolic Church (Niagara), 3400 Schmon Parkway, St. Catharines on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 12:30pm. There will be a light lunch after the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to The Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind would be appreciated.
