It is with deep and profound sadness that the family of Joyce Irene Weaver announce her passing after a brief and brave battle with cancer on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at Roozen Family Hospice Centre in Edmonton Alberta.
Joyce was born to Robert Boyd and Irene Lavelle on February 21, 1926, in Stratford ON. At a young age, Joyce moved to Niagara Falls with her parents and older brother Bob. Raised in Niagara Falls, Joyce attended St Patrick’s and Niagara Falls Collegiate Vocational Institute. Joyce was known to proudly sing the NFCVI fight song with her children at family get togethers.
After High School, Joyce worked as a bookkeeper at Fred Boychuk’s Canadian Tire store, where she eventually met her future husband Raymond Harry Weaver. Ray and Joyce went on to marry on September 9, 1950 and had 5 children, 10 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. A skater in high school, Joyce continued to skate with her growing family – her children loved watching their parents do old-fashioned couples skating during Sunday afternoon skating. As the children grew and left home, Joyce returned to work for numerous years as a sales clerk at Tower’s department store in Niagara Falls. Joyce enjoyed her free time at Cataract Lanes 5 pin bowling league, as well as the Niagara Cribbage League. She was not to be missed at St. Pat’s Church 5pm Saturday evening mass with the rest of her Golden Girl friends, including her close friend Theresa Fisher.
Joyce was the rock of the family. She loved and was very proud of all her family and will be truly missed by her children Katherine (Robert Grant) Weaver, Ken (Debbie) Weaver, Karen (Tom) Scott, Kris Weaver, and Kevin (Lesley) Weaver. Additionally, Joyce leaves a wonderful legacy with her grandchildren Michael Weaver, Shannon (Andy) Collard, Liam Weaver, Courtney (Josh) Lewellen, Andrew Parker, Melanie Parker, Sara Grant-Weaver, Iain (Tanya Diduck) Grant-Weaver, Aaron Weaver, and Brennan Weaver. Joyce is survived by her sister-in-law Muriel Weaver, as well as several nieces and nephews-in-law. Joyce was predeceased by her parents Boyd and Irene, her husband Ray, her brother Bob Lavelle, her granddaughter Sara Grant-Weaver, her nephews Bobby Lavelle and Jimmy Lavelle, her sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-law, Mary Lavelle, Amy Duerloo, Olive Rickersey, Grace (Bob) Finnegan, Ronald Weaver, and Maurice Weaver.
Per Joyce’s wishes, she will be flown back from Edmonton, AB to have her funeral at her cherished St. Patrick Church and be buried next to the love of her life Ray at Fairview Cemetery in Niagara Falls ON.
The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers of the Medical and Palliative Care Units of Grey Nun’s Hospital and the Roozen Family Hospice Centre (Pilgrim Hospice Society) in Edmonton. As well as Dr Girard of Roozen and Father Dean of St John the Evangelist Catholic Parish in Edmonton for their care and compassion in Joyce’s final days.
