Mary Helen Downes

Peacefully, on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at Niagara Long-Term Care Residence in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Mary passed away at the age of 92.

Beloved wife of the late James “Jimmy” Downes (1998). Loving mother of Larry (the late Therese, 2021) and Julia. Dear sister of Gordon Cross and the late Harry Cross. Mary will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her extended Downes family and many cousins.

Mary was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Pearl and Thomas Cross on July 6, 1933. As a young woman, she enjoyed playing baseball in a ladies’ league. In her early twenties, she ventured to the Niagara region with her friends Lorraine and Blanche, where she would meet the love of her life, Jimmy. They were married on October 13, 1956, and began building a life together.

Mary worked at Kimberley-Clark for six years before stepping away to raise her children. Once they were in school, she returned to the workforce at Lincoln Trust, where she operated the printer. She had a creative spirit and a passion for crafting, especially jewelry-making, often creating pieces for her friends at the bank. She also enjoyed searching garage and yard sales for unique finds to inspire her creations.

Mary was a wonderful baker who found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved playing cards, visiting the casino, sharing laughter, and spending time with family and friends. A fan of classic television, she especially enjoyed old black-and-white movies.

A Funeral Service will be held at Patterson Funeral Home, 6062 Main Street, Niagara Falls, on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at 11 a.m.
