Mary moved with her family from the UK to Niagara Falls, Canada in 1949. After graduating from N.F.C.V.I., Mary earned her teaching certificate and began her career at Orchard Park Public School. She became an enduring presence there, teaching generations of students over the course of her career. It was not uncommon for former students to return—this time holding the hands of their own children—who would in turn become Mary’s students.
Mary was known for her dedication, her sharp wit, cheeky humour, and playful love of a good joke. She delighted in laughter, enjoyed friendly banter, and was never afraid to tease—especially if it meant lightening the mood. That same spirited competitiveness showed up at the curling rink in her younger years, and later around the table with board games and cards, where she played to win and enjoyed every moment. In true creative fashion, Mary organized challenging Easter egg hunts for the ‘children at heart’ in the family who looked forward to the competitive endeavour, body slams and all!
Mary loved to travel, holding a special affection for Australia. She was an active member of St. Andrew’s United Church UCW, faithfully contributing her time and talents—particularly her baking. Church bazaars were well supplied with an assortment of gluten-free treats made with care and generosity.
Throughout much of her life, Mary lived with chronic pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis. She bore this burden with remarkable strength, perseverance, and quiet tenacity, rarely allowing it to dim her humour or her engagement with the people and activities she loved.
Much loved daughter of the late Winnifred and Stanley Newell. Mary is survived by her loving sisters Jean Whalley (the late Dennis Whalley) and Kathryn Newell; her niece Leslie Gerlofs; and her nephews Darren Whalley (Sarah) and Ryan Newell (Sarah). She deeply cherished her great-nephews Joshua Gerlofs (Julie), Jacob Gerlofs, and Liam Newell, along with many beloved cousins and family here and in the UK.
Mary had a fondness for all things angels. Now she soars with them.
Thank you to Bonnie Mackenzie, and the staff at Chartwell Orchards, Vineland for their care and compassion, and for going the extra mile during Mary’s final days.
A celebration of life will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church on Saturday March 21, 2026 at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Fairview Cemetery, and a light luncheon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to your local chapter of the Arthritis Society or to St. Andrew’s United Church, Niagara Falls would be appreciated by the family.
