It is with a broken heart that I share the news of my mom, Shirley Mae O’Dette’s passing, in my arms, at the age of 89 on October 14, 2022, at Rapelje Lodge (her home for the last four months). Dearly loved mother of Cathy (Frank) Davis (formerly Higham). Predeceased by her loving husband Joseph Leonard “Len” O’Dette (2000) and her mother Edna McDonough (1998). She will be fondly remembered by friends Maria Struthers, Karen Kushniruk, Lori Conte, and staff from both Hospice Niagara and Rapelje Lodge.
Shirley was born in Kirkland Lake, but resided in Niagara Falls for most of her life. In the 1950’s, while working for developer Frank Branscombe, she was given a very special gift. When my parents picked out the lot on which they would build their home (which my mom designed), he named the street in her honour. Among the things Shirley loved were dogs, reading and Sauble Beach (where we spent several vacations). Len and her enjoyed going to concerts at Melody Fair in their heyday. When she was younger she played piano and badminton. She sang like an angel. She had the biggest sweet tooth. Her eyes would light up at the mention of basically any type of sugary treat.
Much thanks to staff at Rapelje Lodge and also staff at Hospice Niagara, where she had an extended stay prior to Rapelje.
Honouring my mom’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service. Arrangements entrusted to Hetherington & Deans Funeral Chapel (905-354-5614). If so desired, donations in memory of Shirley can be made to Hospice Niagara. Online tributes may be made at www.hetheringtonanddeans.com.
