David E. Ferguson (95) formerly of East Lyme, CT died Sunday April 29, 2018 at Westwood Care and Rehabilitation Center in Keene, NH. He was born March 18, 1923 in New London, CT, the son of William D. and Edna Thompson Ferguson.
In June 2009, he moved to Richmond, NH to live with his daughter and son in law.
He married Gwen Gibson on June 8, 1944 in Springfield, MA.
He attended school in Niantic and New London, CT. In 1941 he enrolled in the Naval ROTC at Brown University, Providence, RI. He graduated with the accelerated class of 1945 and was commissioned Ensign, USNR in February 1944.
Mr. Ferguson served on Destroyer Escorts as an Officer in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, Atlantic and the Pacific. He spent time in non-active duty on Submarines and retired from USNR as Lieutenant in 1961.
Mr. Ferguson retired from Electric Boat Division in 1986 after being employed for 34 years in many positions in multitude types of engineering, weapons control systems and Naval tactics.
Mr. Ferguson was on many boards through out his life. To name a few: East Lyme Nursing Association, East Lyme Education, CT Association of Boards of Education, NE Region of the National School Board Association. Charter Member of the Flanders Fire Department. In addition, he was a member of many fraternal and military organizations; Order of DeMolay, Destroyer Escort Sailors Assoc., Life
member of VFW. He was a member of Bay View Masonic Lodge #120 AF & AM from 1944-2018; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, and other Masonic boards
He is survived by three children, Andra L. Ferguson of Manchester, CT; Robert and his wife Paula of Willisburg, KY; Alicia Drew and her husband Richard of Richmond, NH. Four grandchildren, Carrie Adams and her husband Taylor of Chicago, IL; Jonathan Mantak and his wife Flora, great granddaughters Isabella and Madeline of Wellesley, MA; Matthew Drew of Sudbury, MA; Jonathan Drew and his wife Rachel, great granddaughter Leah and great grandson Aaron of Lincoln, MA; sister in law Phyllis of Niantic, CT; sister Luella Meaux of Oak Harbor, WA and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was pre-deceased by Gwen his loving wife of 57 years in 2001. Also, his brother Scott, sister-in-law Evelyn, brother Merton, brother-in-law Berry Meaux and granddaughter-in-law Catherine Kier-Drew.
A celebration of life service will be held at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Lake Avenue, Niantic CT on May 17, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Friends of Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve (FOHNP) or a charity of donor’s choice.
