I am the proud Son of Leo J. McGovern. I called him Pop, Dad and friend. My Dad was a man given 2 years to live after his participation with the Joint task force USS, Dixie in 1946. He was on the ship that successfully launched the Atomic Bomb test on the Bikini Atoll Island. As long as I can remember I never heard my Dad complain and like my brother said never met a stranger. I can remember so many times visiting my parents and meeting many new people that they befriended, especially during the Christmas Season. You see if you haven't met my father and come to know me even a little you would know him. I am a lot like my father. He instilled in me many ways to love life. I witnessed firsthand how he took care of my Mother and both sets of Grand Parents through the years. Never to complain, Love for animals especially his dogs, so many pets throughout his life. Also, he instilled in me to do my best to never get to high or certainly to low in life. I must include that he taught me some things not do as well! The closest I heard him complain was not too long ago, He said Son if my eyes where a little better I would be perfect. This is from a man that lost almost everything from the Storm. He developed an eye disease that continued to get worse through the years but he didn't let that get him down. He also was one of the most optimistic Saints Fans and I believed he coined the phrase “wait till next year, watch they are going to the Super Bowl”. I will miss calling my Dad and having coffee going to Church with him and my brother. The long drives and the short ones visiting his brothers and even taking him to the Casino in the last couple of years.
I am thankful that God gave me the opportunity to share Christ and pray many times with my Dad and believe in the HOPE that I will see him again in Heaven!
Finally a message to my brothers, I will always be there for you and so very glad to be a McGovern! Thanks Bryan and Roxanne for allowing Pop to have a home with you for the last 7 years of his life.

My father would give a starnger his last dime if they needed it. I'll remember my parents always together. When I think of my father I remember all the weekends with famly, with his brothers and his sister and his own parents along with all the cousins,out on the island. Fishing, hunting, and playing horsehoes. I remember the Dixie and Jax beer they enjoyed while the kids had Barqs root beer and all the food. We were lucky to have these times with great family. My father's brothers and sister will remember my father with the dancing and laughter and all the fun they had with their parents at Big Betty's on the island, or at Kings and the bowlng alley on Franklin. All had great times as a family. Now my father is back with my mother in heaven. Hope the Lord put in a slot machine for him, lol. But most of all, I'll remember my father because I see my parents in my brothers. I'll love them just as much as my parents did. My father had a great life, and I have plenty of wonderful memories to remember him by! Praise the Lord for we were blessed.

Uncle Leo was my favorite uncle when I was growing up and although I haven't seen him in years, have thought of him often. He was always so funny and welcoming when I saw him. I remember how much he helped MawMaw whenever she needed something done. He NEVER could say no! I hope all of the McGovern family will rejoice in his life and not feel the sorrow of his loss.

Paw Paw Mac will be missed by his entire family. He was a sweet and generous person to his family and friends.  I will always remember the wonderful family get togethers we had on Lake Catherine with Leo's beloved wife Josie.  We were truly blesssed to have such a friendly, funny, and caring father, father-in-law, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.

Even when he lost everything in Katrina I never heard him complain. In his old age he laughed a lot and always kept his sense of humor. I learned a lot from Paw Paw and I will never forget what he taught me.

Harold and Hilda Smith  send our deepest condolences to our cousin, Leo's family.  We did not stay in touch much as we grew older but we remember the good times we had with all of our McGovern cousins.  Love, Hilda and Harold

Leo and entire McGovern Family.....So sorry to read of your Dad's passing.  Can't help but bring up wonderful memories of the camps on the Rigolets.  We were so fortunate to have had such an outlet for the summer months.  Thoughts and prayers are with you all!
