Robert Burton Robicheaux Sr.

January 27, 1934 - September 25, 2026

A devoted Catholic and loving family man, Robert Burton Robicheaux, Sr. went to be with the Lord surrounded by family on September 25, 2026.

He was born on January 27, 1934, in Good Hope, Louisiana to Blanche Rochelle and Slattery Robert Robicheaux. He was the brother of Joyce Robicheaux Zehnle (the late Richard Zehnle), Charles Donald (the late Barbara Roussell), Francis Joseph (Laura Ogima), and Stephen David (the late Betty Woodson).

He lived in Good Hope, Louisiana and he graduated high school from St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Destrehan, where he met his high school sweetheart, Mary Alice Trepagnier. They married on September 18, 1954, and shared 43 years of marriage. Together, they had six children: Diane Robicheaux Allen (Ernest Allen) of Prairieville; Robert Burton, Jr. of Metairie; Steven Bryan (Robin Babin) of Norco; Douglas Paul (Pamela LeBlanc) of Creola, Alabama; Todd Louis (Sarah Wank) of Anchorage, Alaska; and John Patrick (Paula Smith) of Luling. They had 12 grandchildren: Jason William Allen; Jessica Marie Allen (deceased); Jared Paul Allen; Chad Steven Robicheaux; Dane Michael Robicheaux; Ashley Robicheaux Cauley; Brandon Douglas Robicheaux; Emily Robicheaux O’Connor; Maxfield Darnell Robicheaux; Mary Robicheaux Rose; Zachary John Robicheaux; and Logan Paul Robicheaux. They had 11 great grandchildren: Benjamin Allen, Madeleine Allen, Joseph Davis, Ella Robicheaux, Emma Robicheaux, Caden Orgeron, Isabel Cauley, Alivia Cauley, Elaina Caulay, Stella Robicheaux, Ella O’Conner.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 22 years, Janet P. Matherne Robicheaux. They married on December 28, 2003. Robert had three stepchildren: Michael Anthony Matherne (Leen) of Raceland, Louisiana; Lionel Joseph Matherne (deceased); and Rene’ Paul Matherne of Raceland, Louisiana. He also had five step-grandchildren: Ashley Matherne Adams, Chad Matherne, Mandi Matherne Baudoin, Rance Matherne, and Dylon Matherne. He had 15 step great-grandchildren.

He retired from Shell Norco after 37 years of dedicated service. He served on the Shell emergency response team from 1962 to his retirement in 1989. He was very well liked and respected by his co-workers. He was an original member of the Norco Volunteer Fire Department and served for 30 plus years. He was the last surviving member of the original team of 1962.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, he played baseball and quarterbacked the football team at St. Charles Borromeo High School. He was an avid Tulane fan who also enjoyed cheering for the Saints and watching the LSU Tigers.

Robert was a pillar of the community. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family and others he cared about. Each spring and fall, he planted large gardens to help feed them. He enjoyed hunting, shrimping, fishing, crabbing and carefully recording the fish he caught.

A craftsman at heart, he was always creating something. He built the family home in Norco and his camp in Cocodrie, where he lived until Hurricane Ida severely damaged it. He volunteered at the Sacred Heart Fair and enjoyed cooking and hosting gatherings. Above all, he loved his children. He was the hardest worker that we know. He taught his children many things in life that we would use in our adult lives. He was a great teacher of how to use your God given mind and hands to accomplish many tasks in life.

After Robert and Janet were married, they settled in Cocodrie. Robert and Janet loved to fish and fished almost daily. Together they built a great life and many friends on the bayou. Since they lived there, together they helped service CoCo Village by cleaning camps, cutting grass and assisting with the maintenance of the village. Every holiday season they provided ham and turkeys for the less fortunate in the area around them and in the local community. They also provided housing for Wounded War Heroes Fishing Tournament in the local area. Robert and Janet loved to crab. Janet would peel crabs faster than anyone we knew. Together they stuffed crabs and made bell peppers stuffed with crab. They loved to peel shrimp and make seafood gumbo; fried fish was always a staple in the house. His true passion was fishing with Janet, his baby.

When the mother of his children passed, he became the bond that kept his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren close. Occasionally they rented a destination to gather for the entire family. After his stroke, these gatherings continued but on a much smaller scale.

Loved by all who knew him, he will be deeply missed. He leaves his loved ones with many years of treasured memories through which his legacy will endure.

Visitation will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norco, LA on Saturday, October 10, 2026, beginning at 9AM. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11AM with burial to follow at St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery in Destrehan, LA.

Life’s Detours

Life doesn’t always happen the way you want it to or the way you planned it or hoped for… No matter how hard things may seem… life will change again, and it’s possible that this detour will lead you to a place that will bring you more happiness and let you reach more satisfying places in your heart and life than you’ve ever reach before.
