Ronald Anthony Surmik Sr.

Ronald Anthony Surmik Sr. of Destrehan Louisiana passed away at home peacefully surrounded by family on September 16, 2026, at the age of 82, from complications of dementia. He was born on June 14, 1944, in Lions, Louisiana to his loving parents, the late Julie Marie Poche Surmik and Andrew Surmik Jr. He was known to many as “Mick”.

Ronald is the beloved husband of over 61 years to JoAnn Michelli Surmik. Adored father of Ronald Anthony Surmik, Jr. (Sandi) and Connie Marie Surmik Dufrene; he also leaves behind his grandchildren Anthony John Surmik (Leah), Cameron Cass Dufrene, Carrie Marie Dufrene; beloved great grandchildren Aria Pinah Surmik, Kira Jyn Surmik, Charlotte Rose Chavez. Treasured brother of Andrew James “Jimmy” Surmik III (Betty), Mary Surmik Rook (John), Donald David Surmik (Laurie). His godchildren Beth Surmik Fountain, and Kaitlyn Surmik Roberts and a host of nieces and nephews he loved greatly.

Ronald was a graduate of St. Charles Borromeo High School, class of 1962. He attended Louisiana State University for Architecture until he left to enlist in the Navy. Ronald proudly served his country as a Navy Seabee until he was honorably discharged. Soon after Ronald used his carpentry skills to start his own contracting business, which he ran over 40 years. He built many customs, quality homes and Piccadilly Cafeterias to perfection.

Always there to assist people in need, Ronald was known for his kind, generous ways. Ronald enjoyed riding motorcycles, acquired his private pilot license and flew small planes. An avid hunter and fisherman, he loved boating, trawling, and driving his airboat. He spent his free time enjoying his pride and joy known as his camp and property in Redlick, Mississippi.

He was a huge animal lover, especially with stray dogs and cats. Ronald was often seen giving treats to stray animals on the side of the road. He took in and loved multiple neglected animals.

Friends and Family are invited to attend visitation services at St. Charles Borromeo church on Saturday September 26, 2026, at 10:00 am, with a mass to follow at 12:00 pm. Special thanks to Heart of Hospice staff, especially nurse Kristyn and the social worker Mallorie, and Lucy and Mallory at the VA Nursing Home. They went over and beyond to make sure Ronald was comfortable and well taken care of.
