William “Buz” Melin passed away April 23, 2025, at the age of 80. He is survived by his loving wife, Lynn Craddock-Melin, his sons, Paul and Kenny Melin, and his sisters, Pam Coflin and Mandy (Mike) Duke. He is also survived by his nieces and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Pollyanna Melin, sister Cecilia Melin, Father and Mother-in-law’, James and Paula Craddock and brother-in-law, Wayne Craddock.
Buz was a resident of Anchorage Alaska, moving there from Juneau, Alaska, and before that, Prince Frederick, Maryland. Currently, he was traveling back and forth from Alaska and Luling, Louisiana supporting his wife, Lynn, as she finished up her career. He spent his early years in the US Coast Guard. After separating, he became a lobsterman for a short time, knowing then the sea was his calling. He attended the Calhoun MEBA Engineering School, Baltimore Maryland, graduating second in his class. He then became a member of the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association (MEBA), working out of the union hall, eventually landing permanently on the Philips Washington (a home away from home for him). After Philips went away, he found another home with Maritime Overseas Corporation working on various vessels including his favorite, the Overseas Marilyn. Many fond memories were made during the years he was there including meeting his future bride. Lynn tells a story about not really thinking much about him except as an engineer when working onboard, until he took up her challenge to look her up at home if he was interested. He did, and well, the rest is history. Buz and Lynn were married just shy of 35 years and had two wonderful sons, Paul and Kenny. He said once, he loved going to sea but he even loved more, being home with family. Buz retired after more than 30 years in the US Merchant Marine, most as Chief Engineer, to be with his family.
Buz was a very quiet man until you engaged him in something he knew a lot about, he could fix almost anything and would do anything for anyone, friend or stranger. His love for his dogs and horses was unmatched, proof being they never left his side when he was around. They followed him everywhere. In retirement, he loved to do all the things people do living in Alaska with a real shout out to the Rugby Clubs in Anchorage. He attended many a game and event, even if it was raining and/or cold. He was a soccer coach in Juneau. He was a fantastic cook and whenever the teams or friends got together, Buz was always at his grill, regardless of snow or rain, creating something magical. He also loved reading the classics including self-help books and watching old movies.
Buz will be remembered always as a very loving and giving person. He donated often to the local and state police departments, as well as the National Wildlife Foundation. In lieu of flowers, please support your local organizations in Buz’ name in order for them to continue to serve, protect and provide hope.
