Immediately after graduating high school, he joined the US Navy bringing him to the United States.
Through the Navy, he met his wife of 55 years and he and his family traveled between HI, GA and VA. While in the Navy he studied criminal justice and joined the military police prior to retiring from the Navy as Master-at-Arms (MA1). Continuing his service with the federal system, he retired after an additional 20 years with the Fleet Supply Center as General Foreman in Norfolk, VA.
After serving 41 years of federal service, he founded the United Filipino American Senior social organization (UFAS) holding monthly social gatherings with support from his family every 2nd Sunday for 13 years. During this time, he also assisted with various organizations including serving as Vice President of American Filipino Veterans Association of Hampton Roads.
He is survived by his wife, Loreto A Cocal; three daughters, Lorna Ann A. Cocal, Jocelyn C. Adkins (Keith), Darlene A. Hardison (Ray); five grandchildren, Alexander M. Reyes (Mary), Robert L. Cortazar, Jr., Kalina H. Gass (Matt), Keanu D. Hardison and Landon Hostallero; six great-grandchildren, Sebastian, Oliver and Amara Reyes, Robert L. Cortazar, III, Leland B. Cortazar and Phoebe A. Hardison.
