Barbara Jean McMahon, 85, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, peacefully entered into eternal rest on October 29, 2026, leaving behind a beautiful legacy of faith, love, and devotion to her family and all those whose lives she touched.
Born on February 17, 1941, in Charleston, South Carolina, Barbara was the beloved daughter of the late James Massey and Dorothy Smyre.
Barbara shared 38 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Edward McMahon, the love of her life, until his passing. Their love story began in Charleston, South Carolina, where they met and married. As a proud Navy wife, Barbara embraced the adventures of military life, accompanying Ed to numerous duty stations and creating cherished memories along the way. Following his military service, they settled in Norfolk, Virginia, where they made their home.
Above all, Barbara was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was the center of her world, and she treasured every opportunity to share in their lives. Affectionately known as “Nena” to her grandchildren, she embraced that special role with boundless love, warmth, and pride. Her gentle spirit, caring heart, and unwavering devotion to those she loved will forever remain among her family's most treasured memories.
A woman of deep and abiding Christian faith, Barbara lived her life as a reflection of God's love through her kindness, compassion, and faithful service to others. Wherever life took her, she found a church home and eagerly shared her time and talents in ministry. Throughout the years, she faithfully served in Children's Ministry, Women on Mission, Vacation Bible School, and preschool ministries, touching countless lives through her dedication and servant's heart.
During her years at First Baptist Norfolk, Barbara devoted more than 20 years to serving in the church nursery, lovingly caring for hundreds of babies while offering encouragement, reassurance, and support to their parents. Her nurturing spirit and genuine love for children made a lasting impression on generations of families. For Barbara, serving others was not simply something she did; it was a beautiful expression of her faith and the love she carried in her heart.
In addition to her many years of church ministry, Barbara was a dedicated employee of the City of Norfolk, Parking Division where she worked for nearly 15 years before retiring.
Following her years in Norfolk, Barbara relocated to Warner Robins, Georgia, where she became a devoted member of Central Baptist Church. She especially enjoyed the fellowship of the Ladies' Sunday School Class, where she formed meaningful friendships and continued to encourage others through her faith, kindness, and gracious spirit. Barbara had a special way of making those around her feel welcomed, valued, and loved. Her life was a testament to the power of a generous heart, a steadfast faith, and a willingness to serve.
Barbara leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory, including her daughter, Dottie Rumsey (Michael) of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; her grandsons, Justin Rumsey of Goose Creek, South Carolina, Aaron Rumsey (Haleigh) of Summerville, South Carolina, Shawn McMahon (Terri) of Stuarts Draft, Virginia, and Mitch McMahon (Cali) of Staunton, Virginia. Her beautiful legacy of love continues through her cherished great-granddaughters, Kynson, Chandler, and Della Marie. She will also be lovingly remembered by Crystal and Joyce, whom she always considered her daughters-in-law and held close to her heart.
In addition to her beloved husband, Edward McMahon, Barbara was preceded in death by her dear son, Irving McMahon, and her stepfather, Luther Smyre.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Somerby at Mount Pleasant Memory Care and Roper Hospice for the exceptional care, kindness, and support they provided Barbara and her family.
A graveside service, followed by burial, will be held on Thursday, November 12, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Boulevard, Norfolk, Virginia 23502.
Barbara's life was a beautiful example of faith in action, unconditional love, and selfless devotion. Though she will be deeply missed, the countless lives she touched, the family she so dearly loved, and the faith she so faithfully shared will ensure that her legacy lives on for generations to come.
Her earthly journey has ended, but her legacy of love and faith will remain forever in the hearts of those blessed to know her.
