Mrs. Mitchell and Family,
I offer prayers for comfort and strength in your time of loss. Brian was a great friend and a pleasure to work with these past few years. He spoke of his two great passion in his life often;  the first was his family and the second was trains. Please keep in touch with us here at the base and let us know if there is anything we can do for you.

I had five fun years working with Brian at the Coast Guard Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility in Portsmouth. Brian had such a big heart for animal of all kinds. We had several wild cats that would  come around for the lunch left overs every day. We were not allowed to feed them but we did anyway. One day shortly after Thanksgiving we were talking to a Supervisor in the middle of the outdoor compound about a pier work project  when two kittens  dragged out Brian's Thanksgiving  turkey carcass about twenty five feet behind the supervisor. I can still remember Brian keeping the conversation going so the supervisor would not see the cats.  Every morning when I open up the back compound  the grandmother cat is sitting on top of Brian's  government  truck waiting for Brian who is truly missed by man and beast. Im not the cook that Brian was  but the cats are getting use to it. Frank Linkous

My prayers and condolence to the Mitchell family.  May God keep you in perfect peace.  It was a pleasure to have met the Mitchell's.  They were a blessing to The Mentoring of Princesses for a Purpose Organization.  Rest well Mr. Mitchell you were a God sent, but now he needed you in heaven.

Brian was a kind person , he always had a smile on his face. He would help anyone at any time without hesitation. He repeatedly continue to help The Mentoring of Princesses for A Purpose ,  out of Portsmouth Va. We will miss him so dearly but he will continue to live in our hearts and our Organization forever. He and his wife shared , Many trips with our organization. Without even question what for or why support some one they hardly knew ,the best gift anyone could give and that was their time. Rest in Peace Mr. Brian Mitchell. Mrs Mitchell we are always here for you.

It would have been delightful to spend one more time together with our Sangamon street family. We all shared wonderful  childhood memories. May God wrap his loving arms around the Mitchell family during this difficult time. Brian Rest in Paradise.  You were loved and will be dearly missed. 

Always like a brother growing up!  We were born on the same day.  I didn’t consider him a neighbor. He was family. So many memories . He’ll be missed. Rest in peace Brian !

Memories for Brian Steven Mitchell, there's 45 years a good memories with Brian. Wonderful memories of when our children were born. Beautiful memory of when he got married to Darlene. Time was just to short. My God wrap his arms around you all. Warren my heart is filled with sadness. James and Darnell I wish I could just hold you both.

I had the pleasure of serving with Brian in the Navy on a ship 29 yrs ago. We became best friends and have stayed best friends even after getting discharged. I have to many great memories but 2 of them that come to mind are : the first time he ever attempted to make his first thanksgiving turkey he put the oven on broil instead of bake needless to say the turkey burnt.  Years later that would still come up in our phone conversations and we would have a great laugh over it and same with this next memory. The other memory is of a birthday party I had for him at the time with  my 2 yr old son (who is now 28). I decided to use magical candles on their cake (30 some candles) and by the time I got half way thru lighting them the first ones had already melted into the cake. 
Brian was always a very caring, compassionate, respectful gentleman. He loved his flea market shopping and his trains and his family and friends. He would give you the shirt off of his back. He made being underway on the ship bearable. He had an infectious smile and laugh. 
Brian, I will always be blessed that I had a wonderful friend in you. You were taken way to soon my friend!! RIP! I know you are watching over us! 

I remember Brian as always being a kind spirit.  We grow up on a block of family! He was always fun and full of laughter! He will be deeply missed.  I'm grateful to have been his friend ❣

We grew up on the same block in Chicago. Great man!! I remember Brian was the 1st Black man I knew. Who liked heavy metal rock n roll. Lol. I remember him being a fan of KISS. Rest in Power!!🙏🙏🙏

A sad day to lose a good friend, model railroader and co-worker at the Railroad Museum of Virginia. Always a willing and talented  volunteer who was willing to share his trains and talent. We will miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends that he leaves behind. The Lord be with you all.

My prayers and love are with you and your family. I grew up with Brian on “the block”. Brian was one of the leaders of our block and there are too many memories to recount. Brian and the Mitchell family will always hold a special place in my heart.
