CDR Douglas M. Iles, USN, Ret., 81, passed away on July 11, 2022 in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Shreveport, LA to the late Percy and Shirley Iles. He served his country in the U.S. Navy for 31 years, 1 month, and 6 days (but who’s counting?) rising in rank from Seaman to Commander. He served in many positions afloat and ashore, to include USS LEARY, USS DAHLGREN, USS LAFFEY, USS CARL VINSON, and USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (2 tours), SUBINSURVLANT, NTC BAINBRIDGE and COMNAVAIRLANT. His awards and special achievements include Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), and Navy Achievement Medal. He was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for Cuban Missile Crisis and decorations for service during Lebanon, Vietnam Era, Panama, Grenada, Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Doug was a member of Little Creek Amphibious Base Catholic Chapel where he served as an usher. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus (third degree), lifetime member of the VFW, and Post-Commander of VFW Post #392 from 2015-2016. During that tenure, he was selected as Captain of the All-State Honor Post Team. In his spare time, he enjoyed collecting sports memorabilia, volunteering at the VFW, helping others, watching westerns and discussing history and the military. He held a third-degree black belt in karate. Doug was an amazing, thoughtful, generous, proud grandfather with a VERY dry sense of humor. He was predeceased by his three brothers, Jerry, Larry and Claude.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years, Angela; three sons, Scott (Doug Gaither), Demaree, and Douglas, Jr. (Tammy); daughter, Stephanie (Charlie); brother, Joe (Cheryl); sister, Christie Cassell (Randy); and four granddaughters, Marisa, Brianna, Amanda, and Carissa.
