June 9, 1939 – May 24, 2026
Chong Chae Taek, 86, passed away peacefully on the evening of May 24, 2026, at 10:56 p.m. at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, surrounded by the loving family he devoted his life to.
Born on June 9, 1939, in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, Mr. Chong carried with him the resilience and determination of a man shaped by a remarkable era. In 1970, he made the courageous journey to the United States, settling in Norfolk, Virginia, where he would spend more than five decades building a life defined by hard work, pride, and quiet strength.
A small business owner in men's fashion and footwear, Mr. Chong embodied the entrepreneurial spirit in the truest sense. Sharp-minded and meticulous by nature, he grew from a single storefront into a two-location operation — an achievement he sustained with discipline and dedication for the majority of his business career. He rose early, worked late, and treated every customer with genuine care. His stores were more than businesses; they were a testament to what one man could build through perseverance and integrity in an adopted country he arrived in with little more than ambition and drive.
In his later years, Mr. Chong found joy on the golf course, a game that suited his thoughtful and focused nature well. Though he eventually stepped away to give his full attention back to the work he loved, those who knew him understood that whatever he committed himself to, he gave completely.
Mr. Chong treasured all of his friendships deeply, most particularly Mr. Yun Byong Hae — and those affections were returned in kind. His friendships were not merely close; they were brotherly, bound by the kind of loyalty and warmth that few are fortunate enough to know. The connections he formed over a lifetime spoke to a genuineness at his core — a reminder that alongside all he built professionally, he also built something rarer: a brotherhood among those fortunate enough to call him a friend.
Beneath a strong and sometimes tough exterior was a deeply loving father and husband, survived by his beloved wife, Chong Youn Jin, and his son, Chong Henry Tae, of Norfolk, Virginia — both of whom loved him profoundly. That love was at the very heart of who he was. Those closest to him knew the tenderness that resided within, a man who showed his love not always in words, but in the life he built, the sacrifices he made, and the unwavering devotion he gave to his family every single day.
Chong Chae Taek lived a full and purposeful life, entirely on his own terms. He will be deeply missed and long remembered.
