Constance Wray Loving Horden died peacefully at her home on April 8, 2013. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Harold M. Horden, MD, and their two children, Mary Kimball Horden Finney and James Todd Horden. She also leaves her son-in-law Frank S. Finney, and two grandchildren, Audrey Wray Finney and Rachel Anne Finney.
Connie was born in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1928, the daughter of Ruby Franklin Loving and Wray Kimball Loving. She graduated from Farmville Teachers’ College (now Longwood University) in 1949, and went to teach high school in Virginia Beach and, later, in Richmond, from 1949 until 1962. She and Hal moved to Norfolk in 1962, and have resided there since. After retiring from teaching, Connie became active in many organizations including the Women’s Auxiliary to the Norfolk County Medical Society, Meals on Wheels, and the Lakewood Garden Club. She also enjoyed golf and tennis, cooking and entertaining, and was a gracious hostess. Connie and Hal traveled extensively over the years, visiting many foreign countries and continents, from which they have treasured memories.
All who knew and loved Connie will remember her fondly as a highly intelligent lady with a clever sense of humor. An avid reader throughout her life, she appreciated lively discussion and friendly debate, no matter the subject. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
A celebration of Mrs. Horden’s life will be held at Smith & Williams Funeral Chapel on Norview Avenue in Norfolk, VA on Wednesday, April 10, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, the Alzheimer’s Foundation, or Interim Healthcare Hospice of Virginia Beach.
