Born December 25, 1917, in Albemarle County, VA, he was the 13th child born to James Wilmore Houchens and Maude Bonnett Houchens who predeceased him.
Coulter was proud to have served in the Army during WWII and often shared detailed recounts of his escapades in Europe during that time. He was a Golden Gloves Boxer.
Coulter and his wife, Lucille (Lucy), moved to Norfolk in 1948 when he started his career with the Ford Motor Co. after returning from WWII. He was very proud of the 35 years he spent with Ford.
Coulter was a simple man who believed in working hard and taking care of family. He loved the ocean, animals, being outdoors, ice cream, a drink of whiskey, but above all else loved his family. He was the best Daddy and PawPaw ever!
Coulter is survived by his loving and devoted daughter, Jeanette Salamon and her husband, David Moochler, of Virginia Beach, son Donald W. Houchens, Granddaughter Jennifer Leigh Ryan and her husband Phil, and their children, Olivia Harper, and Philip William (Will) Ryan IV, Grandson Joseph Thomas (J.T.) Salamon, and Grandchildren Coulter C. Houchens III, Lauren Houchens, Glenn, Pamela, Priscilla, and Melissa Gregoire and her son, Glenn Michael Cruea.
He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Lucille, oldest son, Coulter C. (Chris) Houchens, Jr., and daughters Shelby Jean Houchens and Marjorie E. Gregoire.
