

Deloris Louise “Weez” Cooper, 77, was called home on December 28, 2024. Born on September 17, 1947, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Deloris was the eldest child of the late Johnnie Thomas Cooper and Agnes Burrus Cooper. She was raised in Norfolk, Virginia, where she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1965.
From a young age, Deloris had a clear vision for her life’s purpose: caring for others. This passion led her to join the United States Army Medical Corps, where she served as a Medical Specialist from 1965 to 1968 during the Vietnam Conflict. Her exemplary service earned her the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, reflecting her unwavering commitment and dedication.
Continuing her pursuit of excellence in healthcare, Deloris earned her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification in 1970, followed by an Associate Degree in Nursing (RN) in 1976, and pursued graduate studies in 1980. She built an illustrious career in nursing and healthcare administration, dedicating over four decades to Sentara Healthcare. Her roles included serving on the Burn Unit, where she provided compassionate care, and later as the Director of Accreditation Regulatory Standards,ensuring quality healthcare delivery.
Even in retirement, Deloris remained a pillar in the medical community, consulting for various organizations and serving as Virginia Department of Health Vaccine Ambassador. Her advocacy and expertise were instrumental during critical times, and her contributions left an indelible mark on public health.
Deloris's life was defined by her devotion to her family, friends, and community. A gracious host and talented cook, her home was the heart of countless family gatherings filled with laughter, love, and her signature dishes. She had an adventurous spirit, enjoying travel across the United States and abroad, often accompanied by her cherished family and friends. An avid walker, she found peace and joy in nature’s simplicity.
A cancer survivor, Deloris transformed her personal experience into a legacy of giving. She became a proud philanthropist for the Sentara Brock Cancer Center, ensuring that others facing similar challenges would receive the care and support they needed. Her generosity and compassion will continue to inspire and uplift future generations.
Deloris was preceded in death by her beloved brothers, Johnnie Cooper Jr. and Troy Cooper. She is survived by her siblings Randolph Cooper and Erma C. Bracey of Norfolk, Virginia, and Jeanette Cooper and Michelle Cooper of Virginia Beach, Virginia. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews, and a host of extended family and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
Deloris’s unwavering love, kindness, and resilience will remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. Her legacy of service, compassion, and strength will continue to guide and inspire us all.
