

He is predeceased by his parents Kenneth Edward Black and Christine Bowen Black, his only son Elbert Edward Black Jr., grandson Edward Allen Black, and granddaughter Krystal Lynn Black, brothers Floyd "buddy" Black, Terry Black, Ricky Black Swain, and sisters Barbara Barnette and Sharon Black.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Carolyn, admiring grandsons David(Chelsea) and Stephen(Danielle), adoring great-grandchildren David II, Vivian, Emory, and Stephen Jr., daughter-in-law Sharon, brother Ronnie, and sisters Joanne Thomas, Brenda Black, and Gloria-Jean Webster.
Elbert was born on January 18, 1937 in Pinetown, NC, he was the second oldest of 10 children. Many of his brothers and sisters looked up to him as a role model. In 1954 he joined the US Army serving as a paratrooper. After serving in the Army, he and Carolyn married in March of 1959 and welcomed a son in January of 1960. Elbert worked as a respected master electrician until 2014 retiring from E.G. Middleton, Inc at the age of 77. Elbert was a smart and hardworking man, he loved to work with his hands. In 1965 he built his family home that he still resided in while in Virginia Beach. He acquired a piece of property in North Carolina on Lake Gaston, where with the help of close family he built a summer house that would create wonderful memories for generations. He also enjoyed collecting and restoring classic cars like his cherished 1961 Chevy Impala. He and Carolyn enjoyed cruising in the Chevy, whether it be a road trip or around town relishing each other's company. Elbert delighted in being a Poppy to his grandkids and great-grandchildren. He was always taking them on trips to Florida, visiting Disney world and Daytona Beach, creating an everlasting bond that they will treasure in their hearts. Elbert will forever be an enduring influence on those that knew him.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday July 11th at 11am for service at Woodlawn Funeral Home 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd Norfolk, Va 23502. With reception to follow at Kempsville Baptist Church 5204 Princess Anne Rd. Virginia Beach, Va 23462.
