August 8, 1952 – October 4, 2025
Ernest Lee Shipman, Jr., devoted husband, father, brother, and friend, passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on October 4, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family. Born on August 8, 1952, to Dr. Ernest L. Shipman, Sr. and Helen Elizabeth Hudnutt Shipman, Ernest’s life continued to grow in love, service, and Christian faith.
A Marine Machinist for the United States Navy and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Ernest dedicated his career to serving his country with quiet skill and integrity. His committed work ethic and longevity reflected a deeper sense of purpose and pride in contributing to something greater than himself.
Ernest shared 48 years of marriage with his cherished wife, Marcia Shipman. Together, they built a life of faith, friendship, and enduring love. He was a devoted father to Joshua Lee and Ernest Lawrence, whose lives were shaped by his example of kindness, humility, and strength. He also leaves behind his loving sisters, Pam and Ruth, and their stepbrother, Stephen—along with a circle of family and friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
Ernie was known for his generosity, gentle spirit, and love for the Lord. His presence brought comfort and joy to those around him, while his legacy of love and faith will continue to shine through all who knew him.
A viewing will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, Virginia. A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 17, 2025, to include a Chapel Service and a Graveside Memorial in the Garden of the Good Shepherd.
Though he will be deeply missed, Ernest’s life remains a testament to faith, family, and the enduring power of love.
