Obituary of George Edward Thompson
Our beloved George (“Mickey”) left us Wednesday morning, September 17, 2014 to join God and his family and friends that have passed before him. George was born October 19, 1930 in Dearborn, MI, the son of Cecil and Eileen Thompson. He married the love of his life, Josefine Schlüter, on August 31, 1954 and they celebrated over 54 years of marriage. George proudly served in the U.S. Navy from January 1948 to July 1969, when he retired from NATO and was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, and multiple Good Conduct Medals and National Defense Service Medals. He then enjoyed a 26-year career with the City of Norfolk Streets and Bridges Department prior to retiring in 1995. He will be deeply missed by many, including his brother Cecil and wife Joann of MI, brother Earl and wife Barbara of FL, brother-in-law Martin Sigarto of AZ; son Robert Thompson and wife Claire of PA, daughter Georgianna (Gigi) Walentiny of Virginia Beach; grandchildren Matthew Walentiny, Jennifer Walentiny and family, James Walentiny, Joanne Lynch and family, and Debbie Italiana and family; five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Dorothy Sigarto, his beloved Josie, and his son-in-law, Steve Walentiny. We have many wonderful memories of his fabulous sense of humor, laughter, and countless stories. He lived his faith by example and all who knew him are the richer for it. Visitation will be at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk, on Thursday, September 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be held at Smith and Williams on Friday, September 19 at 2:00 p.m., with burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery to follow immediately thereafter. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Norfolk SPCA in his memory. Friends may offer condolences at www.smithandwilliamsnorfolk.com “May love always lift you, your heart always guide you, faith always lead you.”
