

Howard Mayo Smith, lovingly known as Poppa, was born on May 11, 1931 in Queens New York to the late Mike and Irma Chessa. Shortly after graduating from Jamaica High School, he enlisted into the United States Marine Corps. While home on leave, he met and fell in love with Anne McQueen and they were married for 58 years until her passing in December 2011.
After an honorable discharge, he continued in the reserves while also working for the New York City Transit Authority as a bus driver. After retiring from the military and the transit authority, Howard began driving chartered buses which he loved. In 1994 after moving to VA Beach, he continued to drive chartered buses, while overseeing their dream home being built.
Howard had a love for aviation and listening to jazz. He would often attend parades and air shows. He also enjoyed listening to and attending jazz shows. He collected and recorded lots of the music. He loved taking pictures and videos, also working on cars. But Howard's greatest love was his grandchildren and great grandchildren, with whom he adored and loved spending quality time with.
Howard was predeceased by his loving wife Anne, and a grandson Michael. He leaves to cherish his memory; his 2 sons Kevin and Randy, 2 daughters in-laws Jackie and Sandy, his grandchildren, and their spouses Ashley (Jason), Ariana, Randolph (Abeje), and Asia (Darnell). Also, his great grandchildren Smith, Karalyn, Leilah, Mya and soon to arrive baby Williams, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, neighbors, and friends.
A visitation will be held on December 1, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Woodlawn Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens, located at 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, Virginia, 23502.
The funeral service will follow at 11:00 am at the same location.
Howard Mayo Smith will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, located at 6309 E. Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk.
