

James H. Africa, Sr., 82, passed away on November 18, 2015. He was born on January 12, 1933 to the late Henry D. and Elma L. Africa in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years Jeannette A. Africa.
Mr. Africa served in the U.S. Navy and retired after 20 years of service. He received his Masters of Arts degree in Music Education from ODU. He worked as a Music Instructor at Brewbaker Academy, and a substitute teacher for Norfolk Public Schools. He was the Pep Band Leader for ODU Pep Band. He led the Navy Music band support to the Special Olympics in Chicago in 1968.
He is survived by his son James H. Africa, Jr.; three daughters, Lanette E. Africa, Tynette E. Africa and Sonette E. Winslow; and four grandchildren, John G. Williams, Jr., Benjamin P. Williams, Ryan M. Winslow, and Scott J. Winslow.
A Visitation will be held on Monday, November 23, 2015 from 6-8pm at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, 818 Norview Ave., Norfolk VA 23509. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery on November 30, 2015 at 11am.
