James E. Overstreet passed away peacefully on September 27, 2014 at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Eleane, his three daughters, Jeanne Pool-Coppage (Charles), Kathryn Fogelsonger (Len), and Ruth Kelley (Mike); his sister Hilda and his brother Thurman; nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.
Jim was born in Halifax, Virginia in 1922. He joined the Navy after graduating from high school and served for twenty years, rising to Chief Petty Officer Hospital Corpsman. After duty in Trinidad and French Morocco, he and his family settled in Virginia Beach in 1956. Upon retirement from the Navy, Jim worked for the U. S. Post Office for fifteen years, retiring at age 55 whereupon he and Eleane traveled to Florida every winter, fished from their boat “Party Time” in the summer, and enjoyed the company of their friends and family.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at 2PM at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, 6329 East Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, Virginia. Eleane and Jim’s daughters wish to acknowledge and thank the staff of Comfort Keepers, specifically Krista, Jackie and Gina, for always being available whenever we needed them and for their kindness to Jim and Eleane; also Heartland Hospice for their compassionate advice and support; and Chaplain Dick Dinges for providing final thoughts and prayers at the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the American Heart Association or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation would be appreciated. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.woodlawngroup.com
