

John Patrick Swanson, Sr., 86, passed away peacefully at home on October 23, 2017, due to complications from multiple strokes over the last 5 years. John was born January 7, 1931 in Stamford, CT to the late Gertrude and John Swanson. He was predeceased by his loving wife Mary F. Swanson, his infant granddaughter Jamie Lyne McGovern, his brothers Edward Sennewald (wife Louise Sennewald), Barry Sennewald, and his sister Dorothy Memale (husband John). John is survived by his five children: Betty Swanson-Doyle (husband Jonathan), Sheryl McGovern, Patricia Kerr (husband Larry), Ginny Dill (husband John), and John P. Swanson, Jr. (wife Amanda); ten grandchildren: Richard (Buzz) Laird (wife Wendy), Joshua Sikes, Michelle McGovern Neaves (husband Jake), Dallas McGovern, (Sherri Ryan), Eric Kerr (wife Sarah), Jake Kerr, Katie Kerr White (husband Scott), Sean Dill, Landon Swanson, and Kylie Swanson; eight great-grandchildren: Jack Laird, Olivia Laird, Emma Laird, Gracelyne Neaves, Kelsey McGovern, Natalie Kerr, Harrison Kerr, and Bayleigh White. He is also survived by his sister Sandy Lowe of Norwalk, CT and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. John also had a large extended family which consisted of Mrs. Marlene Rowe (husband Wayne), daughters (Julie Rowe Spring (husband Carl) and Lisa Rowe (husband Scott)) and granddaughters (Beth Anne (husband Ryan and daughter Evelyn), and Riley Spring); Kristopher Meyerhoffer (wife Ashley) and their 3 sons (Elijah, Sam, and Avery).
John grew up in Stamford, CT and went to Stamford High School. He played soccer and caddied at the Weeburn Country Club. He was a short order cook at Whistle Restaurant. He served for 4 years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the U.S.S. WRIGHT (VS-27). He worked for Virginia Electric and Power Company (VEPCO) for 35 years. He was a member of the local International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Union for 62 years and served as the President for a period of time. He and Mary were avid duckpin bowlers with the VEPCO (Dominion Power) duckpin league at night. He coached the Great Neck Bulldogs football team and the Great Neck Swingers softball team. The Great Neck Bulldogs won the City Championship with John as the head coach in 1971 and 1980. He coached the Great Neck Cubs baseball team in 1982 to a championship also. John was an avid golfer and played golf 2 days a week, while he was able, and enjoyed 2 yearly trips to North Carolina with his group of senior golfers. He also was a member of Wycliffe Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder on the Session and as the caretaker and groundskeeper.
After his strokes, John had great care given by Larry Kerry, Georgie Delacruz, Raquel Iglesia, Judy Sarmiento, and Norie Walters. The family wants to thank them for their service and support over the years. A special thanks to Mrs. Marlene Rowe for her delicious food and special support.
A private family burial will be conducted at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens on October 27, 2017. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home with a reception immediately following the service. Woodlawn Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Wycliffe Presbyterian Church or Lafayette Presbyterian Church.
