It is with deep sadness that we announce that Joseph John Murphy, born in Wilkes-Barre, PA passed away at age 92, on April 4, 2026. He is survived by three daughters: Marina Murphy (Anneliese Thomson), Patrice Murphy Wood (Fred Wood), and Jennifer Murphy Fowler (John Fowler); six grandchildren: Mary Elizabeth Lentz, Lauren Murphy, Michael Wood, Katherine Wood, Cameron Fowler, and Elliott Fowler; three siblings: Mary Ellen Gushka, Margaret McNulty, and Neil Murphy; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife Marcella Murphy, his second wife, Jean Ford, and daughter, Kristen Murphy Lentz (Monroe Lentz).
Known as “Joe” to most, he lived his life with energy, humor, curiosity, and a strong sense of routine. He made his career in the United States Navy and retired as a Captain. Travel was his love, and he relished the travel opportunities his military career provided him and his family. In retirement, he became an avid tennis player and runner, even completing the Shamrock Marathon several times. He also took up the game of golf, which led him to meet his long time retirement companion, Mary Nowak. In later years, he greatly enjoyed his daily routine of walking the boardwalk with his devoted friend, Pat McGlenchy.
Joe never shied away from a lively debate and cherished his daily happy hour at 5 PM, a ritual that reflected both his discipline and his appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. Joe valued service and community. In retirement he was very committed to his volunteer work with several organizations: the Lions Club, Lee’s Friends, Virginia Beach General Hospital, and Meals on Wheels, where he delivered meals until he retired from that position at age 90.
His family is grateful for the exemplary care he received from Virginia Beach General Hospital, Seaside Nursing, and Trinity Hospice during the last weeks of his life.
