October 9, 1946 – September 18, 2023
Linda West Van Rysdam passed away peacefully at home in Virginia Beach on Sept. 18, 2023. She was born Norfolk, VA on October 9, 1946, graduated from Floyd E. Kellam High School in June 1965, followed with graduation from the Leigh Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in February 1967. Linda worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Virginia Beach General Hospital. She volunteered as a firefighter and EMS Cardiac Technician with the Plaza Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, serving as President. A work related injury forced her into early retirement, but did not curtail her drive. She was an Elder in Bow Creek Presbyterian Church, instrumental in starting Food Pantries in two churches. She was referred to as a “Mother Hen” for her passion in providing this wonderful service.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Berlyn G. West and Elizabeth Garland West. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Andrew Van Rysdam, her 2 sons Edward B. Harrison and William “Bryan” Harrison (Kelly). Also 5 granddaughters Kandice, Rebecca, Brianna, Haliegh and Mikalyla; and 4 great grandchildren Alexis, Kaleb, Lucas and Kruz. Other survivors are her two sisters, Carol and Betty Ann; her brother Grant; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Her favorite quote:
“Remember me with smiles and laughter, for that is how I’ll remember you”
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Plaza Volunteer Rescue Squad or the Kempsville Volunteer Rescue Squad.
There will be a gathering to fellowship with the family from 6-8pm on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Linda will have her ashes spread through the mountains she loved, in a private family ceremony.
