Mary Elizabeth Brown, age 73, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, entered eternal rest on June 5, 2026. Born July 14, 1952, Mary will be remembered as a beloved and cherished presence—steadfast in faith, devoted to family, and generous in the quiet, consistent ways that make a life truly meaningful. Her gentle strength, patient spirit, and kind-hearted compassion shaped the home she built and the many people who were grateful to know her.
Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Mary was the beloved daughter of the late William J. Whitaker and Jessie Mae Whitaker. She received her early education through Norfolk Public Schools and proudly graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1970. From the beginning, Mary carried herself with honesty and wisdom, pairing hard work with a thoughtful, selfless concern for others—qualities that would define her life and leadership.
In 1975, Mary entered the apprenticeship program at Norshipco, graduating as a first-class insulator mechanic. Over the next six years, she honed her craft, working skillfully on various types of machinery, piping, and ductwork. Her ability to lead with both competence and care quickly stood out, and within two years she was supervising more than 20 trades and leading employees.
Recognized for her talent, resilience, and unwavering dedication, Mary made history in 1984 when she became the first female promoted to Assistant Superintendent in Norshipco’s production department. Two years later, she was promoted to Superintendent. Her career culminated in 2017 when she was appointed Director of Programs. In that role, Mary’s inspirational example was felt not only in her results, but in the loyal, compassionate way she treated people—firm when needed, always fair, and often disarming tension with a touch of humor. Her leadership left a lasting, positive impact on colleagues, community, and the countless lives she touched.
Beyond her historic professional achievements, Mary’s greatest joy and proudest legacy was her family. She was a devoted mother and a faithful matriarch whose love was steady, whose counsel was wise, and whose presence was deeply comforting. Her memory will be forever cherished by those she loved so deeply.
Mary leaves to cherish her memories: her daughter, Tara Anderson (Jermaine); her two sons, John Dexter Davis III, and Ernest Joseph Brown Jr. (Ashley); her grandchildren, Chalontae Davis, Chakiya Davis, Kenyatta Brown, Jaylen Anderson, Favour Davis, and Bryce Edwards; her great-grandchildren, Shaniyah Evans, Juliana Davis, Josiah Davis, Iyana Davis, Londyn Davis, and Dream Lockhart; her siblings, Rochelle Mclaurin (Bernard), Vernessa Willis (Irving), Rana Cuffee (Ira), Darnell Whitaker (Sylvia), Michael Stephens, Dominique Whitaker, and Keshon Elliott; her only uncle who held a special place in her heart, Milton Murrell (Martha); and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and special friends.
