Nellie M. Wilson

Nellie Mae Wilson passed peacefully at the age of 94 at Sentara Hospice House in Virginia Beach. She is survived by her daughter Sandra “Sandy” L. Wilson. Nellie was preceded in death by her husband Joseph “Jack” J. Wilson.

Nellie was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on June 5, 1922. She was the youngest of six children. Nellie became a naturalized citizen after marrying “Jack” and she was very proud of her citizenship. Nellie’s love of ice hockey never wavered after leaving Canada. She played ice hockey in Canada as a kid, but adapted to Virginia living by enjoying the beach and the ability for growing beautiful flowers. Nellie was always on the “go”, but spent many hours relaxing by becoming an accomplished seamstress. Even during her retail career at Pembroke Mall’s Women’s specialty shops, she always made time for family and volunteer work. Giving her talents to Girl Scouts of America for 15 years as a leader and Day Camp Director was always a joy for her. Her outgoing personality was greatly appreciated while volunteering at Boone Clinic for many years through the Red Cross. Each and every organization Nellie helped was deeply grateful for her time and dedication and fun-loving way.

Nellie made friends easily, but she was able to make close friends by becoming a “walker” with other seniors who gathered at Pembroke Mall very early in the morning. There was no holding Nellie back. Nellie not only was fast walker, but walked a mile every time, then it was time for friends and coffee.
