Peggy Joyce Dailey Hancock passed away at her home in Norfolk, Virginia surrounded by family on September 28, 2024 after surviving conditions and cooking techniques that could have easily claimed her decades sooner. She was 92.
Born in Ironton, Ohio on January 3, 1932, Peggy called much of the United States home at one point or another – from Kentucky to Georgia, Rhode Island to California and beyond – before settling into Norfolk’s Norview neighborhood in 1961.
First and foremost a devoted mother and wife, Peggy later found her calling at Sherwood Forest Elementary School where she was a Home School Community Worker and Office Manager for more than 20 years. Generations of Norfolk’s children knew her simply as “Aunt Peggy.” Her nearest and dearest will remember her passion for piña coladas, bacon, and Yahtzee among so many other small joys.
Peggy is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, George E. Hancock, siblings Regina, Johnny, and Jay Dailey, grandson Daniel Oliver Hancock, and great-grandson Landon Mercer.
In her final years, Peggy often said that having a big family was the pride of her life. She is survived by her sister Patty Dailey Frantz, her four children – Hugh, George Jr., Bonita and Angela – six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, as well as innumerable neighbors and friends who considered her kin.
A graveside service will take place at 1pm on Saturday October 19, 2024 in the “Garden of Life” section of Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. A celebration of life will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers please send donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or slip some extra butter into your meal tonight, whichever best warms your heart. Please visit her webpage at www.woodlawnnorfolk.com to leave a note of condolence to her family.
