Raymond Ray A. Copeland, Sr.

NORFOLK – Raymond A. Copeland Sr., 90, passed away Monday, August 26, 2013 after a valiant battle with cancer. He was the son of the late James C. Copeland and Georgiana Campbell Copeland and was predeceased by his sister Annie May Copeland, and two brothers James Thomas Copeland and Roy Edward Copeland. Born in Gallatin TN on September 18, 1922, and reared in Cambridge MA, he was a naval veteran of World War II. After retiring from United Insurance Company of America, he worked for the American Red Cross delivering blood throughout Hampton Roads. Until he fell ill this summer, he was an active member of Miles Memorial United Methodist Church and the Elite Fitness Gym at Wards Corner. He was predeceased by his wife of nearly sixty years Dorothy A. Wilder Copeland. They were married in Braintree, MA on June 11, 1944. He is survived by a daughter Suzanne Carter Ruble and her husband Jim of Williamsburg, VA, a son Andy Copeland and his wife Mary Anne of Quinton, VA; three grandsons Michael Carter, II and his wife Lisa of Florida, Jeff Carter and his wife Teresa of Norfolk, and Alex Copeland of Richmond; two great granddaughters Tiffany and Courtney Carter of Norfolk; two brothers-in-law Leo Strong and his wife Peggy of Norfolk, and Joe Strong and his wife Danita of Zebulon, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday September 4, 2013 at Miles Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norview Avenue Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross or the American Cancer Society. You may pay your condolences at www.SmithandWilliamsNorfolk.com

Raymond Copeland SR. Was my great uncle, James T. Copeland Is my grandfather. I am doing a family tree. And I have pictures that you were kind enough to share. I have researched, and found so many documents. THAT I HAVE BEEN SO WILLING TO SHARE. AND AT LAST SOMEONE SHARED HIS LIFE WITH A STRANGER. My mother Gladys D. Copeland. always told me I have a uncle Raymond. Hope it is this one. So, sorry o had to go through this loss personally.
