Ruth Irene Jones

Ruth Irene Jones passed away peacefully on 03/23/2014. She was born on May 7, 1917 in Martin County, NC to the late Edward Gainer Taylor and Nora Lanier Taylor. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, John H. Jones. Following their marriage they moved to Norfolk, VA where she eventually became a Dietician and worked at many of the hospitals and care facilities throughout Hampton Roads, including Lafayette Villa Nursing Home, Norfolk General Hospital, Leigh Memorial Hospital, and Portsmouth Psychiatric Center. Ruth was an excellent seamstress and met many friends through the years of mending and making clothes. She was very involved with the Estabrook Civic League in Norfolk where she also leaves many friends.

She was preceded in death by four sons, James Edward, Larry Marvin, Andrew Lee and Russell Martin; a sister, Elsa Browning; a brother, Marvin Taylor; a half-brother E.T Taylor; two brothers-in-law, William Browning and Percy Fitchett; a son-in-law, James Cullop and a grandchild, John Kevin Jones.

Ruth is survived by daughters Janie Harrison of Chesapeake, Sandra Cullop of New Orleans, and Katherine Lynn Hubert and her husband Bud of Chesapeake; daughter-in-law, Lani Krueger of Virginia Beach; sister, Doris Fitchett of Urbanna, VA; sisters-in-law, Louise Taylor of Chesapeake and Linda Taylor of Williamston, NC; half-brother Dan Taylor and his wife Nell of Williamston, NC; a niece, Carolyn Bailey and her husband Seth of Windsor, NC; two nephews, Frank Taylor of Chesapeake and Bobby Taylor of Myrtle Beach, SC; eight grandchildren, Russell, Danette, Jeff, Brian, Dawn, Deborah, Kat, and Michelle; nine great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, Charlene, Ryan, Connor, Brandi, Wesley, Caiden, Madelyn and Noel; and one great-great-grandchild, Lucas.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the entire staff of both Cedar Manor Assisted Living as well as Hospice Community Care for their care and devotion to our mother and their wonderful support to us through the last several years of her life.

The family will receive friends at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norview on Thursday, 3-27-14 from 6-8 pm. A service to celebrate her life will be held Friday, 3-28-14 at 11 a.m. at Smith and Williams. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park in Virginia Beach.
