

Selby Ray Ballance "Foots", 79, passed away at his home with his loving family by his side. Born on September 22, 1931 in Micro, North Carolina he was a devoted family man and admired by all. He was happily married to his lovely wife, Merlene for 57 years. He is predeceased by his father Albert Ballance and Mary Ellen Ballance. Surviving relatives are his wife, Merlene Ballance; sons, Rick and Jeff Ballance; daughter, Mary Ellen Maloney; sisters, Addis Morris and Eunice Viderick; brother, Carl Ballance; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Yale, Keith, Kendal Rose, Matthew, and George. He has many nieces and nephews, and loved all of his buddies at Ocean East Tackle. He worked with Norfolk and Southern Railroad as a Yard Conductor for 36 years before retiring in 1986. He was an active member of the Kempsville Masonic Lodge, No. 196, A.F. and A.M., a member of the Supply Hunt Club for 27 years, and the Aragona Pembroke Recreational League. An avid Virginia Tech sports fan, he loved watching the Hokies play ball. He especially loved spending his spare time with his grandchildren and enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and watching his grandchildren play ball! The family would like to invite friends to gather at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd from 6:00-8:00 pm on Thursday, February 3rd, 2011. A service to celebrate Selby’s life will be held Friday at 1:00 pm., February 4th, 2011 at Woodlawn Chapel which will be conducted by the Reverend Prentis McGoldrick, internment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family request that in lieu of flowers that Memorial donations will be sent to Aragona Pembroke Little Leage, 595 DeLaura Lane, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23455.
