Shirley Evangeline Spencer was born on June 11, 1943 in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Samuel and Mary Spencer. She was preceded in death by her children Jeanette, Jeffery and Melody, as well as her daughter in law Natalie; sisters Sandy, Renell, Willimena and Ernestine; four brothers Clifton, Terry, Athell and Thomas Harold.
She leaves to mourn her brother Roland and her three sisters Mary, Elizabeth, and Pastor Maryann Walker; three sons Ronald, Tyrone, and Moochie; two daughters Yvonne and Valerie; Godson Reshid Walker; eighteen grandkids, forty-four great grands and four great-great grands; tons of nieces, cousins and friends that she loved dearly.
As a young girl Shirley’s family relocated to New York City where she grew up. Shirley was very kind, loving and caring to any individual she encountered. Everyone adored her and her inner and outer strength was unmatched. She battled with several illnesses and still found a way to care for others regardless of her circumstances. Shirley resided in Bobbit High Rise building in Norfolk, Virginia for 13 years. Everyone in her building knew of Ms. Shirley. She always had a big sense of humor and would say things like “YOU CAN’T LOSE WITH THE STUFF I USE!” and “I’M THE ONE AND ONLY IF THERE’S ANOTHER, SHE’S A PHONY!”
She loved to sing and rewrite every song lyric using her own words. Christmas was her most favorite time of the year because it was all about giving and if you knew Shirley you knew that no one was left ungifted. She attended Monticello Baptist Church where she deeply adored her Pastor Anthony J. Hanes and her church family. No one came before God; she depended on Him fully. Shirley gained her wings on October 31, 2021. She was called home to be with The Lord, as we all know: to be absent of the body is to be present with The Lord.
A Celebration of Ms. Spencer’s Life will be held on Thursday, October 11, 2021, 2:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home.
The Spencer family would like to thank everyone from near and far for the prayers, cards, flowers and all the acts of kindness shown during our time of bereavement. May God Bless You. The Family.
