William "Billy" Hughes, 84, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, beloved husband, father, grand and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on Friday, May 1, 2020 in his home with his wife and daughter by his side. Billy was born in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on October 9, 1935 to the late John and Lula Beasley Hughes.
He was baptized in the Christian faith at London Bridge Baptist Church. After attending Princess Anne High School he honorably served his country as a heavy duty equipment mechanic for the United States Army for 6 years. August of 1960, he married his sweetheart Allie. After his military service, he worked as an auto mechanic for 30 years, and civil service at Navy Air Terminal in Norfolk for 20 years.
He was a player and lover of many sports, a longtime Washington Redskins and Carolina Tar Heels fan. He was very passionate about NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt Jr. Billy was also a longtime member of Moose Lodge # 39 of Virginia Beach, Virginia. After retiring he took up his favorite hobbies working in his garage, watching sports, NASCAR, Carolina Tar Heels and those Redskins. Also spending time with his bride, daughter, grandson and 3 great-grandchildren for which he adored.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Rodney Hughes of Virginia Beach, Virginia and his nephew, Anthony Forbes of Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eva "Allie" Hughes of Virginia Beach, Virginia; a daughter, Christine Hughes Upton and longtime partner Bryan Winslow of Belvidere, North Carolina; a grandson, Timothy Perkins wife, Shannon; 3 beautiful great-grandchildren, Madeline, Audrey and Charlotte Perkins of Powhatan, Va; a sister, Patsy Hughes Gray of Elizabeth City, North Carolina; a brother, Larry Hughes wife, Virginia of Tampa, Florida; and many adored nieces and nephews, and extended family and friends.
We also would like to thank the incredible staff at Westminster-Canterbury Home and Hospice Care. They supported the whole family with love and compassion right up to the end and after.
Due to Covid-19 services are private and for immediate family only. Family will receive visitors at the family home on Thursday, May 7th, 2020 starting at 3pm.
