

Virginia Beach, VA William "Bill" David Phelps, Sr., 91, went to be with the Lord on May 23rd, 2010. Bill was born in Appomattox, Virginia to James Nelson Phelps and Maude Ethel Nowlin. He was a retired Aircraft mechanic after 32 years with The Naval Air Rework Facility. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII who served aboard the Battleship U.S.S. Texas in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. Bill was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church. He was an avid gardener, devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family dearly. He was especially proud of his three grandsons. Bill is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maude Wood Phelps; his son David Phelps (Suzanne) of Virginia Beach; his daughter Dianne Pigford (Tommy) of Chesapeake; 3 grandchildren; Will Phelps, Taylor Phelps and Dillon Pigford; and a host of special relatives and friends. Services will be held in the Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home at 11:00 am Thursday May 27, 2010 conducted by the Rev. John W. Cole, II with interment to follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk.
