Barry Christopher Whitley, a gentle and generous heart, passed away unexpectedly due to complications associated with medical care on November 20, 2025, at the age of 48. Born on July 8, 1977, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Barry brought light wherever life carried him. His compassion, kindness, tolerance, and quiet resilience shaped not only the way he lived, but the way he made others feel: seen, cared for, and understood.
Barry’s journey took him from the shores of Virginia Beach to Ashland, Topeka, Lawrence, and ultimately Norman, Oklahoma, the place he called home for the last 25 years. Along the way, he collected memories, friendships, and a deeper appreciation for the world around him. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Kansas, driven by his innate desire to understand and support others.
He found joy in life’s simple, meaningful moments—long walks that cleared the mind, the company of pets who adored his gentle nature, the energy of a good workout, and the sounds of electronic music that lifted his spirit. Barry’s heart was open and steady; he was someone who instinctively chose kindness, always wishing good for the people around him.
Barry’s life was enriched by the love of his family. He is deeply missed by his mother, Sharon Whitley (Barre) of Norman, Oklahoma, and his partner, Jamie Bortscheller, of Oklahoma City. He lives on in the hearts of his brother Brian Whitley, sister-in-law Ellen Whitley, and nephew Nathan Whitley, all of Parkville, Missouri. His father, Robert Thomas Whitley, preceded him in death.
Though his time here was far too short, Barry’s legacy is one of love: quiet, steady, and powerful. His warmth will continue to echo through the lives of those who knew him, encouraging them to lead with kindness just as he did. The world is brighter for having had him in it, and his spirit will continue to shine in the hearts he touched.
