On June 11, 1988 in Missouri City, Texas, Bob married Penny and together they joined their families. They would have celebrated 27 years of marriage of this year.
Bob graduated with High Honors from Michigan State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Zoology in 1954. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine in 1958. He interned with the U.S. Naval Hospital from 1958 to 1959. In 1960, Bob was assigned as the Officer in Charge of the U.S. Naval School specializing in Submarine and Deep Sea Diving Medicine. He then received a Master’s of Science in Radiation Biology from the University of Rochester in 1961. Bob took a literary sabbatical from 1962 to 1967 during which time he completed his residency in Occupational Medicine from the University of California Los Angeles and a Master’s of Public Health. He served on the USS THOMAS EDISON and the USS HENRY CLAY from 1961 through 1964. In 1967 through 1970, he was the Senior Medical Officer & Instructor of Diving Medicine at the U.S. Naval School. He was Head of the Environmental Stress Division at the Naval Medical Research Institute from 1970 to 1973. From 1973 to 1976, Bob completed his residency in Psychiatry at the Naval Regional Medical Center.
During his years of college he achieved a National AAU Wrestling Championship in 1951. He earned the Big 10 Wrestling Championship in both 1953 and 1954 as well as the NCAA Wrestling Championship in 1954. Bob was selected for Phi Kappa Phi, National Honor Society in 1954. He was awarded the Western Conference Award for Scholarship & Athletics in 1954. He was also a member of Alpha Omega Alpha in 1958.
Bob started his private practice in 1980 in Houston, Texas. He continued practicing in Norman, Oklahoma when he and Penny moved in 1990. He retired in 1999 only to return to practice in 2011. He retired again in 2014.
His survivors include his wife Penny of Norman; children: Victoria Gallas of California, Terry (Nicole) Hoke of California, Dr. Lisa (Ginny) Hoke-Waterman of Norman, Stephanie (Steve) Litchauer of Texas, Sarah (Brian) Garcia of Texas; 12 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; siblings: David (Wanda) Hoke, Jerry Hoke, John (Glenna) Hoke; sisters in law: Orina Hoke and Janet Hoke; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: brothers: Tom, Montee and Dick Hoke.
