Carol Louise Cole-Frowe died on February 25, 2020, in Oklahoma City, OK. Carol was born July 1, 1953, in Norman, Oklahoma, to James C. Cole and Kathleen Franke Cole. A graduate of Norman High School, Carol initially pursued flute performance at the University of Oklahoma, where she played in her beloved Pride of Oklahoma marching band; later, she discovered a true fervor for journalism and attended the University of Central Oklahoma, where she graduated with a BA in Journalism/Professional Writing in 1994.
Carol had the uncanny ability to ask questions that would penetrate to the truth, and she made a refreshing mark on Oklahoma journalism. She won numerous awards for her dogged, insightful investigative wordsmithery at both Oklahoma newspapers and international news organizations, including the Norman Transcript, the Oklahoma Gazette, the Associated Press, and the New York Times. She poured her heart and her radiant energy into the Oklahoma Society of Professional Journalists. Her favorite subject was water, “…water quality, quantity, distribution, transfer, aquifers, lack of, you name it.”
From Lagos to Taipei, from Machu Picchu to Barcelona, Carol was always on her way to or from somewhere, and always had something to say about it. Her adventurous spirit inspired all around her, and her strong will and fearlessness permeated her every interaction.
Carol is survived by her husband, Robert Frowe; daughter, Kathleen Mills, of Lakewood, CO; brother Paul Cole and his husband Randy Gaugert, of Raleigh, NC; brother Robert Cole of Santa Fe, NM; and former husband, James Mills. She is preceded in death by her mother, Kathleen Cole, and father, James Cole.
Carol was a steadfast believer in the power of mentorship and was an enthusiastic animal lover. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carol’s memory to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma, as well as Second Chance Animal Sanctuary of Norman, where Carol adopted several of her adored pets.
Memorial Service/Celebration of Life will be announced in the near future.
