David was born December 6th, 1940 in New Orleans, LA. He and seven siblings grew up along the Mississippi and Louisiana gulf coast. Exploring each of their many hometowns with older brother Don, David developed a lifelong love of nature and animals.
Following his graduations from Eunice High School and Southwest Louisiana Institute (now ULL), David moved to Oklahoma to earn his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Oklahoma State University. In Stillwater, he met Karen Griffith and the two were wed on August 26th, 1967 in Karen’s hometown of Guthrie.
David joined the US Army Reserves during college, and following his time in the service, they settled in Norman. First as a partner at Westwood Veterinary Hospital and then as a solo practitioner at Golden Valley Pet Clinic, he served the Norman community as a small-animal veterinarian for 36 years, developing a devoted following.
In the 1980’s, David rekindled a childhood fascination with pigeons and began racing homing pigeons competitively. He developed a winning loft but also a reputation as an expert in avian health. He helped establish the Association of Pigeon Veterinarians and was honored as the American Racing Pigeon Union’s Man of the Year in 1989 for his work promoting proper pigeon health and nutrition.
In the early 1990’s, David became an avid cyclist after encouragement from a friend. That sparked a passion for cycling that thrived right up until the end. He made many enduring friendships in the Norman biking community, and he loved sharing the sport with his kids and grandkids. David could often be found in a beautiful State or National Park pursuing a love of travel and the outdoors, while finding some great places to ride.
David is survived by his ex-wife (but still best friend) Karen Marx, his three sons and daughters-in-law Jeff and Trish Marx, Greg and Laura Marx, Mike and Jennifer Marx, six siblings, eight grandchildren and eight (and counting) great-grandchildren.
David/Dad/Grandad will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to the charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held June 27, 2026 at 2:00 pm at Primrose Funeral Service, 3901 N. Flood Ave., Norman, OK.
