Spc. David Gibbins Tompkins, 27, of Norman was received by the Lord on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. David was born May 28, 1985 in Denton, TX to Flake Gib Tompkins and Sharon C. Tompkins. He graduated from Norman North High School in 2004 and earned his Journeyman’s License in 2012.
David lived his life in Norman where he joined the Oklahoma National Guard in 2009. He had recently returned from a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan in support Operation Enduring Freedom with C CO 1/179 INF 45th Infantry Division.
An avid motorcycle enthusiast, David rode with the motorcycle group Freedom Riders, a biker crew comprised entirely of veterans of the war in Afghanistan. David was also a long time employee of A-1 Electric, Heat, and Air where he worked with his best friend Kyle Beneventi and many others who were like a second family to him, including owner Steve Nievar who referred to David as a “second son.”
His interests and hobbies were many and varied. Over the course of his life he was involved in the Jr. Circuit Rodeo earning a 1st place buckle in bareback riding. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and weight lifting. He trained for a time as an MMA fighter competing in several professional fights.
David is preceded in death by his grandparents Frances Gibbins Tompkins and Flake H. Tompkins of Midland, TX, and an uncle Alan Foreman of Norman.
He is survived by his father Flake Gib Tompkins of Portales, NM; mother Sharon C. Tompkins of Norman; sisters Trisha Michelle Tompkins and Ashley Nicole Rogers and husband Lt. Jeffrey Niles Rogers; grandparents Ramon R. Foreman, Barbara M. Slenker, and Nancy G. Foreman; aunts and uncles Joseph and Myriam Tompkins, Tami Tompkins, Kae Tompkins-Eichler, Angela and Burgess Stengl, and David and Marikka Foreman; cousins Sasha Tompkins, Jorome Tompkins, Grace Tompkins, Jimmy Tompkins, Samantha Villa, Megan Eichler, Michael Eichler, Matthew Eichler, Susan and Juan Salamanca, Shara and Eric Turner, Kyle Stengl, Joshua and Heather Foreman, Andrew and Karen Foreman, Raymon and Becky Foreman, John Foreman; and seventeen second cousins.
