on June 27, 2025. Born in Waukegan Illinois on
November 5, 1949, he was the son of Clarence Mair and
Vera Bown Mair. David Mair was a kind, humble, brilliant,
man who shared his life with his many friends, colleagues,
family members, and former students. His is an example
of a life well lived.
Dr. Mair taught at the University of Oklahoma for 34
years. His areas of expertise included Technical Writing
and Composition, Rhetoric, and Literacy (CRL). He
served the OU English Department as Director of First
Year Composition and English Department Head before
his retirement in 2013.
David loved music, animals, travel, and cooking.
While he loved all animals, Dave especially loved dogs
and dogs loved Dave. He adopted dogs and he always
had at least two or three dogs sleeping, running, playing,
barking, and living happy dog lives. Dogs made David

laugh and cry. While he laughed a lot with his dogs, he
also cried with them when they were ill or hurt.
David was a wonderful cook. Anthony Bourdain was
his idol and like Bourdain, David loved to travel, learn,
cook, and eat. David and Karen traveled as much as
possible. Their first trip together was a spontaneous flight
to Aruba and after that, they made regular trips home to
Antioch, IL and also to Cancun, Jamaica, Sedona, and
Las Vegas. One of their last trips was to Las Vegas to see
The Rolling Stones. They were not disappointed.
Dr. David Mair is survived by his wife, Dr. Karen Jobe,
his sisters, Joan Larson and Sheryl Holmes. He is
survived by his nephew Dan Larson, nieces Lisa Holmes,
and Jacque Adams and her spouse Tom Adams. He is
also survived by great nieces Courtney Scheuermann, her
spouse Logan, great-niece Lindsey and her spouse Kyle,
great-great niece and nephew Austin and Emma. He was
preceded in death by his Brother in law Charlie Larson.

While he was still teaching, Graduate students knew
where to find Dr. Mair. He would be in front of Gittinger
Hall, smoking, talking, laughing. Since he retired, those
who knew him well could often find David sitting on a
barstool in Cohiba Lounge. Those who chose to sit and
have a beer with Dr. David Mair knew that they had
befriended someone special. He will be greatly missed.
