Elizabeth Monroe, age 74, passed away peacefully on Memorial Day, May 25, 2026. She was born on July 2, 1951 in Fort Worth, Texas, to Laurence Short and June Timmons Short. Elizabeth was raised in Oklahoma, where she developed the values, creativity, and love of family that would define her life.
Elizabeth graduated from Anadarko High School with the Class of 1969 and later earned her degree from Southwestern College in Weatherford, Oklahoma. She married her high school sweetheart, John Monroe, and together they built a loving life centered around family. Their greatest joy was their beloved son, James Monroe.
Elizabeth's passion for writing, art, and literature was deeply rooted in her family history. Inspired by her grandparents and great-grandparents, who were among the early settlers of Indian Territory, she began writing at the age of ten and never stopped. Reflecting on her craft, Elizabeth often said, "I have always thought of myself as a Southern, kitchen-sink writer." Throughout her life, she shared her gift for storytelling through published works, which remain available through her Amazon author page, E. A. Monroe.
Elizabeth leaves behind her husband of 55 years on August 11th John, her only son James, siblings, family, and friends, especially her best friend and childhood friend Rickey Briody.
Elizabeth will be laid to rest on June 5, 2026 at Memory Lane Cemetery in Anadarko, Oklahoma in a small private service for family.
Elizabeth's final words to her loved ones reflected the faith and warmth that guided her life:
"Meet you at the pearly gates."
