

He was born August 6th, 1920, in Bloomington, Illinois to George William Whitehead and Christina Maria (Mary) Gutschlag Whitehead. He grew up in the Chicago area and graduated from Downer's Grove High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in a non-combat role, and was stationed throughout Europe. He later worked as a Civil Service employee for the U.S. Air Force at Tinker AFB in OKC. He transferred to Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM, from where he retired.
He had a 50-year career of volunteer service with the Boy Scouts of America. He began by reviving Troop 27 in OKC, serving as its Scoutmaster. He then served on many troop committees and District Councils in the Last Frontier Council and the Manzano District. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, Scouting's highest honor, in 1996. He also received the Lamb Award, the highest award for Lutheran Scouters. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in OKC, Redeemer Lutheran Church in Albq, and Trinity Lutheran Church in Norman, OK.
He was preceded in death by Evelyn Whitehead, his wife of 58 years, and his older brother George W. Whitehead of Boston, Mass.
He is survived by his sons Thomas of Port Orford, Oregon, and Richard and wife Vicky of Norman, OK. He is also survived by his grandchildren Scott and Rebecca Whitehead of Norman, OK, and his "adopted family": Bill, Linda and Jennifer Kemp of Albuquerque.
Services will be Saturday, February 11th at Trinity Lutheran Church, Norman, OK, with Pastor David Nehrenz officiating.
His family wishes to thank the staff of Rivermont Gardens and Heartland Hospice for their exceptional care.
He was a truly gentle man who will be missed by all who knew him.
