

Iona Flippin, lovingly known as Pat, was born July 23, 1922 in Blair, OK to Ben and Nevada (Locknane) Patterson, the first of 4 children, and died January 26, 2014 in Guthrie, OK at the age of 91. She grew up in Blair, where she and 2 of her younger brothers delivered the Daily Oklahoman for 6 years. Pat graduated from Blair High School in 1940 and was enrolled at OU during WWII. She married another OU grad, H. Paul "Flip" Flippin, in 1953. Pat and Flip were both lifelong supporters of OU athletics and activities, with Pat traveling on the train to see her last OU-Texas game at the age of 90.They had no children of their own, but had a hand in raising several. Flip preceded her in death in 1997.
Pat began her lifetime of teaching at Washington, OK before moving on to Altus High School, where she taught for 26 years. She moved to Norman in 1972 and began teaching at Moore High School in the English and Drama departments, before becoming principal at the age of 75. After her retirement from Moore HS, Pat went on to teach at UCO in Edmond for several more years.
Pat is predeceased by her husband Flip, her parents, Ben and Nevada Patterson, and two brothers, Ellis and Dale. She is survived by her brother, Jim, and his wife Wanda, of Guthrie, sister-in law, Carol Patterson, of Plano TX, several nieces and nephews and her faithful 16 year old poodle, CoCo.
Services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, February 7, at St John's Episcopal Church in Norman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Pat's name to St. John's Episcopal Church of Norman.
