

James was born on September 17, 1937, in Lequire, Oklahoma, to Doyle and Sevalow (Ward) Kious. He graduated from Port High School in 1956 and went on to build a life defined by faith, service, and devotion to family.
On March 21, 1961, James married the love of his life, Mary Lou Bowles, in Sentinel, Oklahoma. Together, they shared 64 wonderful years of marriage, creating a home filled with love, faith, and generosity.
James proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for four years, spending three of those years stationed in England as a Military Police officer.
Following his military service, he began a long and dedicated career at M-D Building Products, where he worked from 1964 until 2009, retiring three times over the course of nearly 50 years.
In his free time, James found joy in listening to hymns and gospel music, fishing, camping, and spending time with his family and friends. He was deeply committed to helping others and devoted many years to serving with the Royal Rangers of the Assembly of God, where he served as a longtime commander. James was a faithful member of City Church in Moore, Oklahoma, and lived his life as a reflection of his strong faith and generous spirit.
James will be remembered as a kind, loving, and big-hearted husband, father, uncle, and friend whose life touched countless people.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents; brothers Dean and Oral Lee Kious; sister Virginia James; brothers-in-law Clinton Hubbard, W.J. Rutherford, Keith Berry, Jerry Bray, and Weldon James; and his beloved fur babies Pooch, Pumbaa, and Hera.
James is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lou Kious, of the home; daughter Jana Lou Sampson of Moore, Oklahoma; bonus son Jeff Bird and wife Stacy of St. Joseph, Missouri; siblings Arlena Hubbard of Port Huron, Michigan, Edna Berry of Corsicana, Texas, Kathryn Rutherford of Corsicana, Texas, and Linda Bennett of Moore, Oklahoma; along with many cherished nieces and nephews, and members of the Turnage and Little families.
A funeral service will be held on December 17, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Primrose Funeral Service, located at 3901 N. Flood Ave., Norman, Oklahoma 73069.
James will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, located at 2301 E. Indian Hills Road, Norman, Oklahom
